Things to do at Whitney Plantation

Whitney Plantation, roughly an hour's drive upriver from New Orleans on the River Road, was the first museum in the United States built entirely around the history of slavery, and it tells this site from the point of view of the people who were enslaved here, not the family who owned it.

That sets it apart from Laura Plantation nearby, which draws on the planter family's own written records, and from Oak Alley, whose quarter-mile alley of live oaks is the main draw. Tickets run in the 20s of US dollars, and a guided walk through the grounds and memorials takes around 90 minutes.

Visiting both Whitney and one of its neighbours is not repetitive: each museum was built to answer a different question about the same stretch of river.
